We lucked out with a break in the rain. The sun came out, and we had a great ride on the new and improved Deer Valley course. I felt really good at the start–even though the long hill climb starting from the word “go” was not very conducive to my usual fast start routine. Still, I beat the group to the top of little stick and held them behind me until the second climb. I gave up two spots there. First by was John Higgins, a Johnny come lately who placed third at the last two races. Next up was Kevin, of course, and I just tried to stay close. I could hear Brad behind me too. At one point he was telling me to go faster, which was a little embarrassing given that Brad was sick as a dog today–doping weakens the immune system :) .

We finished the first lap and started up the painful hill again. I passed Kevin. Then Kevin passed me. Then I passed Kevin again. By the time we got to the top of little stick again I was out in front where I could hold Kevin behind me. I thought I might be able to stay in front on the second climb too, but sure enough Kevin went by and I just had to stay close again.

I finally caught up to Kevin with about a half a mile left in the race. I thought I might have a chance to sprint by him at the finish. Unfortunately, I ran out of room. We finished three seconds apart, taking second and third. Brad impressively held on for fourth despite his condition and what must have been a very painful morning for him.

Keith was in the mix again today coming in fifth. Stan did fairly well today as well, although I am sure he was hoping to do better. Notably absent today was Mike. Maybe he was wishing for a “Sunny Day, sweeping the clouds away.”

Now it is time for some time off. With almost a month until the Snowbird race, I am looking forward to some epic rides, some mid-week races and a family vacation in D.C.
